Divorce rate 2008 - England and Wales

marriage counseling

The divorce rate across England and Wales fell by 5% in 2008 compared with previous year. The number of divorces fell from 128,232 in 2007 to 121,779 in 2008. The significance of this divorce rate is in two folds, firstly this is the lowest divorce rate since 1975, and secondly due to the fact that there has been consecutive drop in the divorce rate over the past five years. Despite the fact that the over all divorce rate in 2008 fell compared with the previous year, the number of male divorces aged over 60 and female divorces aged between 50-59 increased.

Despite the fact that the divorce statistics shows a significant drop in the divorce rate over the past five years, consideration must also be given to the statistic showing a drop in the marriage rate over the same period. Although, the drop in the marriage rate is not sufficient to fully justify the drop in the divorce rate, it never the less shows a trend that proves the divorce rate is not necessarily as significant as initially thought.
