marriage counseling - suicide

Counseling is not just for troubled marriages. Suicide is becoming one of the biggest killers in the civilized world. But research has shown that its because people who commit suicide feel isolated and alone. The feeling of isolation is exaggerated because of the society we live in. Special occasions such as New Year, Christmas and Valentine tend to also have the highest rates of suicide than any other time of the year. This is because people who already feel isolated and alone, tend to be reminded of just how alone they are.

According to the Department of Health (UK), although the suicide rate has fallen in 2006, it is still the most common cause of death for men under the age of 35. In fact the UK statistics has shown that men are three times as likely to commit suicide than women.

So why are men more likely to commit suicide? This is because men are brought up to believe that talking about their emotions and feelings is a sign of weakness, and find it hard to admit that they are having problems and ask for help. The highest incidences of suicide is in the Eastern Europe and Russia.

There is evidence that if someone has a family history of suicide or psychiatric illness, then that person is at a higher risk of suicide than otherwise. But this does not follow that suicide is genetics. This could be caused by "nurture" and not "nature". Research has shown that the people who commit suicide often do so because of one or more of the following:

  • Psychiatric Illness
  • Feelings of depression
  • Hopelessness and isolation
  • Drugs and Alcohol induced depression and disillusions.

Samaritan believe and have proven record that the feeling of suicide is felt for only a limited time and emotional support can help the people at risk through the crisis period. Samaritans believe that the people who want to commit suicide do not wish to do so because they want to die, but because they feel they can't carry on with life feeling the way they do. This is where Samaritans and professional counselors may be able to help.

Research has also shown that people who are depressed and who drink alcohol are at a far greater risk of committing suicide. This is because 93% of all drunken suicide attempts did so after just ten minute or less of thought.
