The divorce rate fell on average by 5.6% in 2003 across the United States, falling from 975,164 in 2002 to 920,060 in 2003 (a drop of 55,104). Although this may seem impressive at first, the statistics also shows that this drop is largely due to a significant reduction across only a few states.

The states that contributed to this over all drop in the divorce rate across the US include Colorado, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Washington. What is also significant about these states is that their drop in the divorce rate was also accompanied by an increase the marital rate over the same period.

The states that had the highest and the lowest divorce rates were Delaware and Nevada respectively. Nevada's divorce rate dropped to 30.04% in 2003, while its marriage rate increased by 12.399%, which equates to a staggering reduction in the divorce rate. Unfortunately Delaware had the highest divorce rate at 64.72%, but what is significantly bad is that in conjunction with an increased divorce rate, there was also a drop in the marriage rate at 6.4% compared with the previous year.
