The divorce rate fell on average by 5.6% in 2003 in US. It fell from 975,164 in 2002 to 920,060 in 2003 (a drop of 55,104). Although this may seem impressive at first, the statistics has shown that the drop in the "average" divorce rate is largely due to a significant drop in only a a few states:

  • Colorado
  • Iowa
  • Massachusetts
  • Minnesota
  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • Rhode Island
  • Washington

These states not only showed a drop in their divorce rate, but also showed an increase in their marriage rate between 2002-2003.

The highest and the lowest divorce rates were:

  • Lowest Divorce rate was the state of Nevada. Its marriage rate increased by 12.399% between 2002-2003, yet the Divorce rate droped by 30.04%! Come on Nevada, tell us the secret.....
  • The highest divorce rate was in the state of Delaware. Its marriage rate droped by 6.4%, yet its divorce rate increased by 64.72%.

PEYMA would be interested to hear from anyone living in these states as to what they feel are the contributing factors that sets these states apart from the the rest.
